Ancient Debris Minecraft Guide: Best Y Level and Mining
Ancient debris in Minecraft is a rare Nether ore that appears most often around Y=16 in Java Edition. Only a diamond or netherite pickaxe collects it.
Ancient debris is the main source of netherite scrap, the material behind netherite gear. It never generates exposed to air, according to the Minecraft Wiki, so you have to dig for it.
This guide applies to Java Edition 26.3 (released September 15, 2026) and Bedrock Edition 26.50 on PC, Mac, Linux, Xbox, PlayStation, Switch and mobile. Facts were checked in October 2026.
Ancient debris in Minecraft: key facts
| Question | Answer |
|---|---|
| Where does it generate? | The Nether only, replacing netherrack (plus basalt and blackstone in Java) |
| Best Y level in Java? | Y=16 on average; tunnel at Y=15 for bed and TNT methods |
| Full Y range? | Y 8 to 119, with most between Y 8 and 24 in Java and Y 8 and 23 in Bedrock |
| Tool needed? | A diamond or netherite pickaxe; any other tool drops nothing |
| Hardness and blast resistance? | 30 and 1,200, so it survives normal explosions |
| What does it smelt into? | 1 netherite scrap and 2 XP |
| Does Fortune help? | No |
| Does fire or lava destroy it? | No; the item floats on lava |
| Is it renewable? | No |
| Average per chunk (Java)? | About 1.6, with a normal maximum of 5 |
What ancient debris does in Minecraft
Ancient debris smelts into netherite scrap, and four scraps plus four gold ingots craft one netherite ingot. That ingot upgrades diamond gear at a smithing table with a Netherite Upgrade smithing template, and enchantments carry over.
Mojang’s November 2021 Block of the Week post describes the block as corroded metal plates holding small amounts of netherite. The item survives lava, so dying in the Nether won’t cost you your haul.
Redstone builders use it too. It resists TNT but pistons can move it, which suits tunnel bore machines.
Best Y level for ancient debris in Minecraft
In Java Edition, Y=16 holds the most ancient debris on average, and the Minecraft Wiki’s mining tutorial recommends tunneling at Y=15. Many guides say Y=14 or Y=15, and all three layers are close.
| Edition | First batch of clusters | Second batch of clusters |
|---|---|---|
| Java | One cluster of 0 to 3 blocks, peaking at Y=16 within Y 8 to 24 | One cluster of 0 to 2 blocks, spread from Y 8 to 119 |
| Bedrock | Two clusters of 0 to 3 blocks, spread evenly from Y 8 to 23 | Three clusters of 0 to 2 blocks, spread from Y 8 to 119 |
Bedrock’s main clusters are spread evenly across Y 8 to 23, so by the wiki’s figures any layer in that band works. Lower layers are safer because you’re less likely to break into a lava ocean.
How to reach the right level
- Build a Nether portal from at least 10 obsidian and enter the Nether.
- Turn on coordinates: F3 on Java, or Show Coordinates in Bedrock world settings.
- Note your portal’s location. One Nether block equals eight Overworld blocks.
- Dig down in a staircase, not straight down, to avoid dropping into lava.
- Level out at Y=15 or Y=16 and start one of the methods below.
The wiki’s tutorial suggests a diamond pickaxe with Efficiency II or better, Mending and Unbreaking III, several Fire Resistance potions, Protection IV armor and a spare block for plugging lava.
Best ways to mine ancient debris
| Method | What you need | Main risk |
|---|---|---|
| Branch mining | A pickaxe and food | Running into lava |
| Bed mining | Plenty of beds | Blast damage, released lava |
| TNT mining | Gunpowder and sand | Blast damage, released lava |
| Lava X-ray | Fire Resistance potions | The potion running out |
| Scouting a world copy | A cheats-on copy of your world | Java commands only |
Branch mining
Tunnel in one direction until you hit lava, then turn. The wiki says an instant-mining pickaxe clears about 12 blocks per second this way. Mine around every debris block you find, since a vein holds up to 3 blocks.
Bed mining
Beds explode in the Nether with a bigger blast than TNT, and ancient debris survives it.
- Tunnel down to Y=15.
- Craft a stack of beds, and keep chests away from nearby piglins.
- Dig a main tunnel and cut a 1x1x5 side tunnel at eye level every 16 blocks.
- Place a bed at the end of a side tunnel, stand back carefully, and use it.
- Check the blast zone, which can expose up to 3 debris blocks.
Use regular beds. Mojang’s 26.3 notes say a straw bed can’t be used in the Nether and is destroyed if you try.
TNT mining
Dig a strip tunnel around Y=14 to Y=16, place TNT on every other block, light the end and back away. Netherrack disappears and the debris stays. Each TNT block takes five gunpowder and four sand.
Lava X-ray
Debris can generate under lava, where you can spot it without digging. Drink Fire Resistance, swim in the lava and set your FOV to 30 to see through it. This finds only a few blocks.
Scouting a copy of your world
In a cheats-on copy of your world, fly through the Nether in Spectator mode and clear netherrack with this Java command:
/fill ~10 ~10 ~10 ~-10 ~-10 ~-10 air replace netherrack
Note any debris coordinates, then dig straight to them in your real world.
Ancient debris myths
- Chunk-border mining doesn’t find more debris, per the wiki’s tutorial, so skip the F3 + G trick.
- Fortune adds nothing, because ancient debris always drops itself.
- Bedrock has no single best layer, since main clusters are spread evenly from Y 8 to 23.
How to get ancient debris without mining
Bastion remnant chests in the Nether can hold ancient debris. Mojang calls bastions a faster but more dangerous source, because piglins and hoglins guard them.
| Chest type | Java: 1 debris | Java: 2 debris | Bedrock |
|---|---|---|---|
| Hoglin stable | 12% | 5% | 5.7% (1 debris) |
| Treasure | 24.5% | 10.3% | 11.3% (2 debris) |
| Generic | 13.5% | Not listed | 13.5% (1 debris) |
Bastion chests can also hold netherite scrap, netherite ingots and the Netherite Upgrade template. Wear gold armor so piglins don’t attack on sight.
How much ancient debris you need for netherite gear
Each netherite ingot takes four ancient debris and four gold ingots. A full armor set plus five tools needs nine ingots, or 36 debris.
| Item | Ingots | Debris | Gold ingots |
|---|---|---|---|
| One armor piece, tool or spear | 1 | 4 | 4 |
| Full armor set (4 pieces) | 4 | 16 | 16 |
| Armor set plus sword, pickaxe, axe, shovel and hoe | 9 | 36 | 36 |
| Netherite nautilus armor | 1 | 4 | 4 |
| Block of netherite | 9 | 36 | 36 |
Netherite spears and nautilus armor arrived with Mounts of Mayhem (1.21.11) in December 2025. Each upgrade also consumes a Netherite Upgrade template, and duplicating one costs 7 diamonds and 1 netherrack. Starting from one found template, nine upgrades cost 56 diamonds.
Ancient debris changes in 2026
Generation hasn’t changed since the 1.16 Nether Update. Java 26.2 (Chaos Cubed, June 16, 2026) added sulfur cubes, which can absorb ancient debris to change how they bounce, but that adds no new source of debris.
Java 26.4 is planned for the fourth quarter of 2026 with Ice Caves. Mojang also revealed a new dimension, The Sift, for 2027 at Minecraft Live in September 2026. Nothing confirmed so far changes ancient debris.
Netherite gear remains a long-term goal in a game that has sold more than 300 million copies, according to The Verge. Microsoft has owned Minecraft since it agreed to buy Mojang for $2.5 billion in 2014, as reported by Bloomberg.
FAQ
What is the best Y level for ancient debris in Minecraft?
In Java Edition, Y=16 has the most debris on average, and Y=15 is the recommended tunnel height. In Bedrock, any layer from Y 8 to 23 works equally well.
What pickaxe do you need to mine ancient debris?
A diamond or netherite pickaxe. Any other tool breaks the block but drops nothing.
Does Fortune increase ancient debris drops?
No. Ancient debris drops itself, one block per block mined, and Fortune doesn’t change that.
How many ancient debris do you need for full netherite armor?
You need 16. Each armor piece takes one netherite ingot, and each ingot takes four ancient debris smelted into four netherite scraps plus four gold ingots.
Is ancient debris renewable?
No. The Minecraft Wiki lists it as non-renewable. Exploring new Nether chunks and looting bastion chests are the only ways to find more.
