How to Install Minecraft Mods on Java and Bedrock (2026)
Install Minecraft mods on Java with Fabric or NeoForge: match your version, drop .jar files in the mods folder, play the loader profile. Bedrock uses add-ons.
To install Minecraft mods on Java Edition, install a mod loader (Fabric or NeoForge) for your exact game version, drop each mod’s .jar file into the mods folder, and start the game from the loader’s profile in the Minecraft Launcher. Bedrock Edition can’t run Java mods. It uses add-ons instead, which you import by opening a .mcaddon or .mcpack file.
We checked every step in October 2026 against Java Edition 26.3 (the Wilderness Bound drop, released September 15, 2026) and the official Fabric and NeoForge player guides, plus Bedrock 26.60 (October 27, 2026) for add-ons. Java 26.4 is in snapshots now; if you’re on a snapshot, expect most mods to break until their authors update.
Key takeaways
What you need before you install mods
You need Minecraft: Java Edition, the official Minecraft Launcher (or a third-party launcher) and one mod loader. Java version numbers changed in 2026: the first drop of the year shipped as 26.1 in March, followed by 26.2 in June and 26.3 in September, replacing the old 1.21.x style.
Pick the loader your mods were built for. If a mod you want only lists one loader, that settles it.
| Loader | Installer | Extra file most mods need | Usual fit |
|---|---|---|---|
| Fabric | .exe on Windows, universal .jar on macOS and Linux (fabricmc.net/use) | Fabric API | Performance and visual mods such as Sodium and Iris |
| NeoForge | .jar installer from neoforged.net | Depends on the mod | Large content mods and modpacks |
Forge is still maintained: it ships 66.x builds for 26.3, updated as recently as late October 2026. NeoForge is a 2023 fork of Forge with a nearly identical install flow, so a modpack that lists Forge installs the same way with Forge’s own installer. Quilt, a Fabric fork, also loads most Fabric mods.
How to install Minecraft mods with Fabric
Fabric’s own guide covers the official launcher only. Third-party launchers have their own buttons for this, so check their docs if that’s what you use.
- Close Minecraft and the Minecraft Launcher. Fabric’s docs say to do this before running the installer.
- Download the installer from fabricmc.net/use. On Windows, the .exe uses the Java that comes with the official launcher, so you don’t need a separate Java install. On macOS and Linux, the universal .jar needs Java installed.
- Pick your Minecraft version, keep “Create Profile” checked and click Install. Use the newest stable loader the installer offers. That was Loader 0.20.1 (October 19, 2026) when we checked.
- Launch the new Fabric profile once, then quit. This builds the folders you’ll need.
- Download your mods plus Fabric API from Modrinth or CurseForge. On each download page, filter by your exact game version and “Fabric”.
- Move the .jar files into the mods folder (paths below). Don’t unzip them.
- In the launcher, choose the Fabric profile from the dropdown in the bottom-left corner and press Play.
The full walkthrough lives in the Fabric documentation on installing mods.
Where is the Minecraft mods folder?
On a standard install, the mods folder sits inside your .minecraft directory. If it isn’t there yet, run the loader profile once or create a folder named mods yourself.
| System | Mods folder path |
|---|---|
| Windows | %appdata%\.minecraft\mods |
| macOS | ~/Library/Application Support/minecraft/mods |
| Linux | ~/.minecraft/mods |
On Windows, the fastest route is Win + R, paste %appdata%\.minecraft and press Enter. If you gave a profile its own game directory (NeoForge recommends this), the mods folder lives inside that directory instead.
How to install mods with NeoForge
NeoForge’s user guide tells you to have the correct Java version installed first, because its installer is a .jar file.
- Close the Minecraft Launcher.
- Download the NeoForge installer .jar for your game version from neoforged.net.
- Run it, make sure “Install client” is selected and click Proceed.
- Open the launcher. A NeoForge option now appears.
- Recommended: on the Installations tab, click New Installation, select the NeoForge version and point it at a separate game directory outside .minecraft. Your vanilla worlds and modded worlds then never mix.
- Start that profile once so it creates a mods folder, then drop your NeoForge mods in.
NeoForge’s client install guide also tells you to back up worlds before updating NeoForge or any mod: copy the world folder out of saves first. Big world-generation mods are where that backup earns its keep.
How to install mods with Forge
Forge still has 66.x builds for Java 26.3, and its steps mirror NeoForge’s. Use it when a mod or modpack lists Forge only.
- Close the launcher and download the Forge installer for 26.3 from files.minecraftforge.net.
- Run the installer, keep “Install client” selected and click OK.
- Open the launcher, pick the new Forge profile and press Play once so it creates the mods folder.
- Drop Forge mods (not NeoForge or Fabric builds) into mods and launch again.
If you’re hunting a terrain mod, check what vanilla Minecraft’s biomes already offer so you know what the mod actually adds.
How to install mods on Minecraft Bedrock (add-ons)
Bedrock Edition (Windows, phones, tablets and consoles) doesn’t load Java mods. Its official route is add-ons, which Microsoft’s creator docs describe as zipped files: a .mcpack holds one resource or behavior pack, and a .mcaddon bundles several.
- On Windows, Android or iOS, open the .mcaddon or .mcpack file. Minecraft launches and imports it.
- Create or edit a world and open its settings.
- Under Behavior Packs and Resource Packs, activate the pack. Some add-ons also ask you to switch on experimental toggles in the same menu.
On Xbox, PlayStation and Switch, file imports aren’t an option. Console players get add-ons through the in-game Marketplace.
How to read a mod’s version label
Most install failures come down to grabbing the wrong file. Take a real example: Modrinth lists an Iris release published June 16, 2026 under the label below.
Reading an Iris version label from Modrinth: mod 1.11.0, built for Minecraft 26.2 on Fabric.
That build says “Adds support for Minecraft 26.2” in its changelog, so it isn’t the file for a 26.3 install. Labels vary between authors, but the game version and loader are almost always in there somewhere. If the label doesn’t say, check the “Game versions” and “Loaders” fields on the download page.
How to install mods with the CurseForge or Modrinth app
If you’d rather click than copy files, the CurseForge app and the Modrinth App do the loader setup for you. The Fabric and NeoForge steps above are the route for installing mods without CurseForge.
- Install the CurseForge app or the Modrinth App and sign in with your Microsoft account when it asks to launch Minecraft.
- Create a new profile (CurseForge) or instance (Modrinth), choosing your Minecraft version and loader.
- Search for a mod inside that profile and click Install. Required libraries such as Fabric API come along automatically.
- Press Play from the app. Each profile keeps its own mods folder, so different modpacks never clash.
The trade-off is control. Apps hide the folders, so when something breaks you’ll still want to know where the mods folder and logs live, which the steps above cover.
Why won’t my Minecraft mods load?
When a modded game crashes or a mod silently doesn’t appear, it’s nearly always one of these:
- Version mismatch. A 26.2 mod on a 26.3 game, or the reverse.
- Wrong loader. A Fabric mod dropped into a NeoForge profile won’t load, and vice versa.
- Missing dependency. No Fabric API, or a mod that needs another mod. Iris, for example, lists Sodium as a required dependency in its own mod metadata.
- Extracted files. Unzipping a .jar breaks it. Shader packs and resource packs also don’t belong in mods; they have their own folders.
- Java version. Minecraft’s 26.1 release notes say the game now requires Java 25 and that third-party launchers may not support the new default JVM settings.
- Server mismatch. Content mods that add blocks or mobs have to be on the server too. Client-only mods (minimaps, shaders) don’t.
For crashes with a long mod list, read latest.log in the logs folder, then split the list. Remove half your mods, test, and keep halving whichever group still crashes. With 40 mods, that finds the culprit in about six launches (2 to the 6th power is 64), compared with up to 40 launches testing one mod at a time.
Are Minecraft mods safe?
Mods are code that runs on your computer, so the source matters. Fabric’s docs say to download only from sources you trust, and NeoForge’s guide points players to CurseForge or Modrinth. Skip reupload sites that repackage other people’s mods behind ad links.
Also check a server’s rules before joining with anything that changes gameplay. Mods that show ores through walls get players banned on plenty of servers. If netherite is the goal, our ancient debris guide covers how to find it without one.
Start small: install the loader, add one mod and its dependencies, launch, then add the next. A modded setup built one tested step at a time almost never needs the halving trick above.
Minecraft mods FAQ
Can you install mods on Minecraft mobile?
Not Java mods. Minecraft on phones and tablets is Bedrock Edition, which can’t load .jar mods or mod loaders like Fabric. Your option is Bedrock add-ons: open a .mcaddon or .mcpack file on Android or iOS, let Minecraft import it, then activate it in your world’s Behavior Packs and Resource Packs settings.
